As a Advanced Hardware Security Tester, you will be responsible for testing the security hardware while performing comprehensive penetration testing of Zebra hardware and embedded systems. You will execute security controls, defenses, and countermeasures to intercept and prevent internal or external attacks or attempts to infiltrate hardware devices.
Location- ***Role is required to be onsite in Lincolnshire, IL office (Hybrid- Minimum of 3 days in the office per week).
Responsibilities:
Hardware Security Testing
- Perform comprehensive penetration testing of Zebra hardware and embedded systems, including:
- Physical access attacks (tamper, debug interfaces, ports, storage extraction).
- Network-based attacks against devices in operational environments.
- Limited-time access scenarios, where a device is briefly accessed and returned to service.
- Extended possession scenarios, analyzing what an attacker could achieve with prolonged access.
- Assess attack surfaces across hardware, firmware, boot processes, storage, and communication interfaces.
- Evaluate device resilience against real-world threat models, including insider, supply-chain, and field-based attackers.
Lab Ownership & Tooling
- Own and evolve Zebra’s Hardware Security Testing Lab, including:
- Selection and deployment of hardware tools (e.g., debuggers, logic analyzers, JTAG/SWD tools, chip-off tooling).
- Network testing infrastructure and RF/communications testing capabilities where applicable.
- Documentation and maintenance of lab standards, safety, and usage guidelines.
- Design repeatable testing methodologies and playbooks for hardware and embedded security assessments.
Reporting & Standards Alignment
- Produce high-quality penetration test reports aligned with recognized industry standards, such as:
- OWASP (IoT / Embedded guidance)
- NIST frameworks
- Common penetration testing and vulnerability reporting standards
- Clearly articulate:
- Attack scenarios and prerequisites
- Risk impact and exploitability
- Reproducibility details
- Practical remediation recommendations
- Present findings to engineering, product, and leadership audiences in a clear and actionable manner.
Collaboration & Program Integration
- Partner with Product Security, Engineering, and Architecture teams to:
- Provide early feedback on hardware design and security controls.
- Validate remediation efforts and design changes.
- Contribute to Zebra’s broader Secure Development Lifecycle (SDLC).
- Support internal security metrics, risk tracking, and maturity improvement initiatives.
Qualifications:
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree required
- 8+ years of experience
- Hardware penetration testing experience
- Product Security experience
- Experience supporting internal security metrics, risk tracking, and maturity improvement initiatives
Preferred Qualifications:
- Advanced degree preferred
- Ability to implement new systems and tools
- Experience managing Security documentation processes
- Advanced analytical skills
- Manages in a fast-paced, high growth, rapidly changing environment
- Demonstrated ability to identify and implement process improvement
- Excellent written and verbale communication skills

Salary: USD 122800.00 - USD 184200.00 Yearly
Salary offered will vary depending on your location, job-related skills, knowledge, and experience.
Additionally, all Zebra roles are eligible for cash incentive programs. For example, sales roles have additional opportunity to earn substantial variable compensation tied to quota achievement. In most other roles, the Zebra annual cash incentive program links Company and individual performance together. Some roles may also be eligible for long-term incentive equity awards.
