Job overview and responsibilities
United Offshore NoSQL Database Engineering Team supports critical after-hours work to enable timely releases, patching activities, and platform changes overnight, along with 8:00 PM - 8:00 AM rotational on-call support for Tier-1 to Tier-5 production NoSQL platforms.
The NoSQL team in India partners closely with offshore development and platform teams to support 24x7 mission-critical applications, providing deep expertise in distributed data stores, streaming platforms, and cloud-native database services. The team is actively engaged in cloud migrations, platform modernization, version upgrades, and performance optimization initiatives across on-prem and AWS environments
NoSQL Production Support & Platform Engineering
• Off-hours support for Tier-1 to Tier-5 NoSQL platforms, including Couchbase, MongoDB, AWS DocumentDB, and Kafka / Amazon MSK clusters
• Design, create, and maintain logical and physical data models aligned with application access patterns and scalability requirements
• Coordinate with systems, cloud, and SRE teams to provision and configure infrastructure for NoSQL databases and streaming platforms
• Install, configure, upgrade, and maintain Couchbase, MongoDB, DocumentDB, Kafka, and related ecosystem tools
• Provide technical consultation to application teams on data modeling, indexing strategies, query optimization, and schema evolution
• Implement and operate monitoring, alerting, and observability frameworks to maximize platform availability and performance while meeting SLAs
• Investigate, troubleshoot, and resolve production incidents, performance bottlenecks, replication issues, and cluster-level failures
• Plan and communicate required maintenance windows and downtime with application and infrastructure teams
• Define, implement, and validate backup, recovery, security, encryption, and access-control strategies for NoSQL platforms
• Perform routine platform activities including capacity planning, scaling, tuning, and health checks
• Review application deployments impacting NoSQL data stores and streaming platforms
• Conduct pre-deployment architecture and data-access reviews with application teams
• Review and provide feedback on NoSQL queries, SDK usage, Kafka topic design, and consumer/producer configurations
• Coordinate release schedules with deployment managers, including assignments and rollback planning
• Lead performance tuning and workload optimization across distributed systems
• Support cloud migrations and greenfield NoSQL setups on AWS
• Perform patching and version upgrades for NoSQL platforms, including Couchbase and MongoDB
• Work with application teams to define patching schedules and maintenance plans
• Send proactive and timely notifications for planned maintenance and upgrades
• Execute patching activities with post-implementation validation and troubleshooting
• Own technical documentation, runbooks, and operational procedures
• Support Backup, Recovery, High Availability, and Disaster Recovery (HA/DR) strategies across regions and clusters
This position is offered on local terms and conditions. Expatriate assignments and sponsorship for employment visas, even on a time-limited visa status, will not be awarded. This position is for United Airlines Business Services Pvt. Ltd - a wholly owned subsidiary of United Airlines Inc.
Qualifications
What's needed to succeed (Minimum Qualifications):
• Bachelor's degree or 4 years of relevant work experience in Computer Science, Engineering, or related discipline
• 5+ years of related experience in database or data-platform operations
• Strong hands-on experience with NoSQL databases and distributed data platforms, such as:
- Couchbase
- MongoDB / AWS DocumentDB
- Kafka / Amazon MSK
• Solid understanding of distributed systems concepts, including replication, sharding, consistency models, and fault tolerance
• Experience designing and operating high-availability and disaster-recovery architectures for NoSQL platforms
• Ability to leverage metrics and telemetry for capacity planning, trend analysis, and proactive issue prevention
• Strong appreciation for automation, standardization, and infrastructure-as-code to deliver scalable and reliable data services
• Experience with query optimization, indexing strategies, and workload tuning for NoSQL systems
• Must be legally authorized to work in India for any employer without sponsorship
• Must be fluent in English (written and spoken)
• Successful completion of interview required to meet job qualification
• Reliable and punctual attendance is an essential function of the position
What will help you propel from the pack (Preferred Qualifications):
• Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related discipline
• Vendor certifications related to Couchbase, MongoDB, AWS, or Kafka preferred
• Hands-on experience with AWS native services, including:
- DocumentDB, MSK, EC2, EKS, S3, CloudWatch, IAM
• Experience implementing automation for NoSQL platform deployment, scaling, patching, and maintenance
• Strong collaboration skills to work vertically and horizontally across application, platform, SRE, and security teams
• Experience operating large-scale data platforms (10+ TB or high-throughput systems)
• Experience with scripting and automation using Python, Bash, or similar languages
• Familiarity with security and compliance requirements such as PCI, SOX, GDPR, and auditing for data platforms
• Ability to support 24x7 United Airlines operations, with a flexible mindset, quick learning ability, and strong ownership
• Proven team player with the ability to make independent, high-impact operational decisions
