- Research Experience in Cold Climate Engineering and Science
Description
his REU SITE offers undergraduate students in science and engineering unique research opportunities, most likely available only in Alaska. The methodologies learned can be applied to other research areas. Students will actively participate in scientific projects to enhance their skills in 1) laboratory work, data collection, and analysis; 2) fieldwork, sampling, and data collection; and 3) modeling. They will experience learning activities, explore local traditions, and connect with Alaska's breathtaking natural environment. We expect this REU to foster a deeper appreciation for Alaska's unique heritage while enriching students' educational journeys.
Topics include Investigating seismic hazards from permafrost thaw in Alaska's Arctic regions, Geomicrobiology of extreme environments, Performance monitoring and evaluation of heat pumps in cold regions, and Trafficability of the littoral mud flats at high latitudes.
