What Your Job Will Be Like
Are you passionate about your work and interested in joining a dynamic team that solves challenging health physics problems in support of our nation's security? If so, the Sandia National Laboratories (SNL) Radiation Protection (RP) organization is seeking an experienced Health Physicist (HP) within RP Policy & Administration Department.
This position is within the RP Training and Education (RPTE) group, which develops and implements SNL corporate radiological worker and group 4610 RP RCT and HP training programs in accordance with 10 CFR 835 and other applicable DOE requirements. The RPTE Health Physicist is responsible for developing and maintaining initial and continuing education training programs for RP health physicists and managers. The selected candidate will also be responsible for developing and implementing radiological emergency response training for in collaboration with the Sandia Emergency Response organization, local responders, and other partners.
On any given day, you may be called on to:
- Develop, maintain, and execute the health physics training program for new hire HPs and RP managers.
- Develop, maintain, and execute continuing training program for HPs and RP managers.
- Develop, maintain, and execute the emergency response initial qualification and continuing training programs for RP responders in collaboration with Emergency Management personnel
- Collaborate with the RP Emergency Response Coordinator, Sandia Emergency Management, and internal/external partners to plan and execute radiological drills and exercises
Work is fast-paced, and assignments may change frequently in response to customer and RP organization needs. Some travel may be required. Activities include working with or in the presence of hazardous materials. Potential hazards include, but are not limited to, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation, chemicals, safety hazards, biological hazards, noise, and ergonomic hazards.
Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.
Salary Range
$102,400 - $199,700
*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.
Qualifications We Require
- Bachelor of Science degree in health physics, radiological sciences, nuclear engineering, or a closely related field, plus five (5) or more years of directly related experience in operational health physics. Or equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.
- Experience with 10 CFR 835 and/or 10 CFR 20, 10 CFR 830, and industry training standards.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance.
Qualifications We Desire
- Certification by the American Board of Health Physics (ABHP) or in the process of obtaining certification.
- Proficiency with standard computer applications, including word processing, spreadsheets, and databases.
- Experience with the following:
- Developing and implementing a DOE or NRC operational radiation protection training program.
- Dedicated operational health physics supervision and guidance to line customers within the SNL functional mission spaces.
- Providing dedicated operational health physics support and guidance in the safe use of radioactive sources and operation radiation-generating devices (RGDs).
- Regulated operational health physics environment such as DOE or NRC radiological facilities or Naval reactors.
- Continuously improving a radiological protection program, including implementation of new radiological controls best practices.
- Proven track-record of excellent organizational and individual leadership skills with the ability to effectively work with and direct other health physicists and RCTs
- Excellent oral and written communication skills and attention to detail
- Excellent interpersonal and customer relations skills and flexibility
- Ability to work effectively independently, and in team situations in fast-paced, regulatory- and deadline-driven environments
- Proven track-record of independently developing solutions to and leading a team in solving specific problems related to issues of moderate to high complexity and impact
- Ability to provide expert analysis of situations to make recommendations to management on changes to policies, processes, or methods.
- Active DOE L or Q level security clearance.
About Our Team
The Radiation Protection organization (4610) provides radiation protection support services to Sandia line organizations and serves as the steward of the Corporate Radiation Protection Program. Services include translating DOE directives and federal regulations into Sandia-specific requirements and guidance; developing tools to identify and control hazards associated with radioactive materials and radiation-generating devices; providing trained and qualified personnel to support radiological activities and operations across the Laboratories; and performing workplace sampling and monitoring to verify the effectiveness of radiological controls.
The organization works closely with the corporate Radiation Protection Safety Committee to establish goals, measure performance, and conduct assessments that support continuous improvement in the safe execution of radiological operations.
Posting Duration

Security Clearance
Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.
Applicants offered employment with Sandia are subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause a clearance to be denied or terminated by DOE, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment.

NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs
If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.
