Description
Riggs CATDescription:
Riggs Power Systems is a leading provider of power generation systems and lifecycle solutions. Our portfolio spans diesel and natural gas gensets, switchgear & controls, energy storage, and field service, delivering reliable power for mission-critical, industrial, and commercial customers. We are growing our Power Systems team and looking for a driven Business Development Representative to help expand our presence in key markets.
Job Description
The Power Business Development Representative is responsible for identifying, qualifying, and developing new business opportunities in the power generation market. This role is front-end focused—building pipeline through outbound prospecting, channel development, and market intelligence—then handing qualified opportunities to Account Managers or Sales Engineers for solution design and close. You'll work closely with sales, applications engineering, service, and operations to support growth targets across new equipment, rentals, and Long-term Service Agreements.
What You'll Do:
Pipeline & Lead Generation
· Identify and pursue new power generation opportunities across targeted verticals such as Hyper-scalers, Colo data centers, Utilities, Co-ops, EPC's, IPP's, oil and gas companies, and many more.
· Build and maintain a steady flow of qualified leads through cold outreach, networking, site visits, trade events, and digital prospecting.
· Develop outreach strategies aligned to product lines including gensets, ATS/switchgear, Behind the meter solutions, microgrids, hybrid/renewable integration, CHP, and service agreements.
Opportunity Qualification & Development
· Qualify incoming and outbound leads using defined criteria (application, load profile, runtime needs, compliance requirements, budget, timeline, decision chain).
· Understand customer pain points (reliability, emissions, fuel costs, resiliency, uptime SLAs, grid constraints) and map them to solution paths.
· Create and present early-stage value propositions and coordinate technical discovery with Sales Engineers.
Market & Channel Growth
· Build relationships with EPC firms, consulting engineers, electrical contractors, facility managers, IPP's, and utility contacts.
· Track market activity, competitor moves, upcoming projects, and regulatory shifts affecting power generation demand.
· Assist in developing channel programs and referral networks.
CRM & Reporting
· Accurately document all prospecting, qualification, and handoff activity in CRM (e.g., Salesforce, Dynamics).
· Maintain a forecastable pipeline by stage, vertical, and solution type.
· Provide weekly reports on activity volume, conversion rates, opportunity status, and key learnings.
Collaboration
· Partner with Account Managers, Product Specialists, and Service teams to develop account strategies.
· Support proposals and customer presentations with market insights, customer context, and site intelligence.
· Coordinate internal resources to ensure smooth transitions from lead to active project.
What You'll Need:
· 10+ years of BDR/inside sales/business development experience, preferably within power generation and electrical equipment.
· Working knowledge of power systems applications (standby/prime power, load sizing, ATS/switchgear, paralleling controls, microgrids, fuel systems).
· Proven ability to prospect and qualify complex B2B opportunities with multiple stakeholders.
· Strong communication skills—comfortable discussing technical concepts with both business and engineering audiences.
· Valid driver's license and willingness to travel locally/regionally/nationally.
Preferred Qualifications
· Experience selling or supporting gensets, switchgear, behind-the-meter solutions, microgrid solutions, energy storage, power rentals, or service contracts.
· Familiarity with NEC, NFPA 110/99, EPA Tier standards, local AHJ permitting, or utility interconnection basics.
· Background working with consulting engineers, electrical contractors, and EPC-led projects.
· Technical/accredited sales training or relevant coursework in electrical/mechanical/energy systems.
Skills & Competencies
· Prospecting & resilience: thrives on outbound outreach and turning "no response" into meetings.
· Technical curiosity: asks smart questions, learns applications fast, and seeks clarity on load, runtime, and compliance.
· Value selling: focuses on uptime, total cost of ownership, and resiliency over price.
· Organization: disciplined tracking and follow-up across long project cycles.
· Team-first mindset: collaborates across departments to move opportunities forward.
Performance Metrics (KPIs)
· New qualified opportunities created per month/quarter
· Meeting-to-opportunity conversion rate
· Pipeline value influenced
· Vertical/channel expansion targets
· CRM accuracy and activity standards
What We Offer
· Competitive base salary + commission/bonus plan
· Mileage reimbursement
· Medical, dental, vision, and retirement programs
