Description
The City of Wausau is seeking a licensed Professional Land Surveyor to join our Engineering Division within the Public Works & Utilities Department.
This position plays a critical role in supporting the planning, design, and construction of public infrastructure projects. The City Surveyor leads and performs surveying functions, ensures the accuracy of spatial data, and provides technical expertise to engineering staff, contractors, and stakeholders.

Purpose of the Position
The City Surveyor leads and performs professional land surveying services essential to the planning, design, and construction of public infrastructure. This position manages all surveying functions for the Department, ensures the accuracy and integrity of survey data, and provides expert technical support to engineering and project management staff to support the successful delivery of public works projects for the City of Wausau.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Leads and performs professional land surveying services, including the preparation and/or review of subdivision plats, assessor’s plats, certified survey maps, plats of survey, and legal descriptions for deeds and easements.
- Interprets and applies property surveys, deeds, easements, and land records; provides clear guidance and recommendations to Public Works staff, other City departments, contractors, and the public.
- Plans, directs, and performs field survey operations, including boundary, topographic, and construction surveys; oversees data collection and ensures accuracy and completeness of field data.
- Directs and performs construction staking and layout activities, including the development of stakeout data from engineering plans using AutoCAD Civil 3D.
- Establishes, maintains, and coordinates horizontal and vertical control systems for the City, including coordination with the Wisconsin DOT and participation in the WISCORS network.
- Serves as Survey Crew Chief; supervises and participates in survey crew activities including right-of-way location, grade setting, traffic study support, and construction layout.
- Provides technical support to engineers and engineering technicians in the preparation of plans, profiles, cross-sections, maps, and construction documents using computer-aided design software.
- Performs drafting and mapping activities, including preparation of survey maps, annexation maps, and other municipal mapping products; collaborates with GIS staff to support mapping and spatial data needs.
- Advises engineers, contractors, developers, City officials, and the public on surveying-related matters and applicable standards, regulations, and best practices.
- Provides training and guidance to Engineering staff on field safety practices and surveying procedures.
- Performs related duties and special projects as assigned.
Physical and Working Environment
Frequent travel within the city of Wausau. Moderate exposure to environmental conditions that impact physical comfort such as poor ventilation and temperature extremes. May require specialized clothing or use of common personal protective equipment. Damage to clothing possible. Close mental and visual attention are continuously required. Moderate physical demands typically found in trades work with moderate exposure to workplace hazards. Requires regular lifting, bending, twisting, turning, and use of power equipment.
Requirements
Education and Experience Requirements
- Associate’s degree in Surveying, Civil Engineering, or other related field, and
- Four (4) or more years of experience in surveying and professional engineering, and
- Professional Land Surveyor license, and
- Valid Wisconsin Driver’s license.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Surveying, Civil Engineering, or other related field
- Experience or training in Autodesk Civil 3D software, Trimble Access and Road field collection software, GPS and conventional surveying equipment and methods, including robotic total stations and automatic and digital levels
A combination of education and experience that provides the depth of knowledge and ability to execute the core functions of this position may be considered.
