COMMANDER - PARAMEDIC
CHICAGO FIRE DEPARTMENT
ADMINISTRATION DIVISION
Number of Vacancies: 1 (Additional vacancies possible pending budget approval)
Starting Salary: $143,754
THIS POSITION IS OPEN ONLY TO CAREER SERVICE UNIFORMED MEMBERS OF THE CHICAGO FIRE DEPARTMENT
Acts as an overall liaison and support for directives appropriated from management. Assists in scheduling and coordinating EMS Special Events and Operations and support services. Works with the Special Operations Commander in preparing Special Operations Incident Action Plans for major public events such as festivals, conferences, VIP, and Presidential visits. Assists with after-action meetings and final reports from all Special Events conducted throughout the year. Reviews and advises on personnel orders and departmental memos. Represents the Executive Office at local, state and, federal meetings. Assists in the preparation of the annual budget.
DUTIES:
- Draft memos for correspondence as directed by the Deputy Fire Commissioner
- Provides support the Deputy Fire Commissioner in the management of staff and equipment assigned to the unit
- Assist in the coordination of response to legal requests for documents, data and information.
- Prepare reports and spreadsheets reflective of unit activities as requested.
- Interpret General Orders, Department Memos and other Emergency Medical Service and Fire Suppression specific reports and data for civilian staff
- During the pre-employment process, assists staff in coordinating pre-hire activities.
- Coordinates the promotion of incumbent members in conjunction with staff and the city's DHR department
- During the development of promotional exams assists the test development team with scheduling and logistics necessary for the creation and administration of the exam.
- Serve as the liaison to subject matter experts and the test vendor in the gathering of data for exam creation.
- Schedules and coordinates training necessary for specific job tasks such as Performance Selection Process and Interview & Consensus Training
- Ensure unit compliance and the forwarding of responsive documents for subpoena and FOIA requests
- Assists as needed in the administration of the EMT Cross Training Program
- Coordinates creation of the Vacancy and Transfer Orders, including the input of data, and validation of requests
- Assists in the coordination of activities with other bureaus, divisions and departments
- Serve as a resource to civilian staff in the implementation of programs involving platoon members or requiring knowledge of CFD operations
- Procurement of necessary services for the unit.
- May respond to emergencies and other special operations.
- Performs other duties as required.
NOTE: Only uniformed career service employees of the Chicago Fire Department who meet the selected criteria will be considered.
LOCATION: 3510 S Michigan and Citywide
HOURS: 8:00 am - 4:00 pm, Extended, Variable
DAYS OFF: Variable

Qualifications
Education, Training, and Experience
• Career Service status as a uniformed member of the Chicago Fire Department is required. Ten (10) years as a uniformed member of the Chicago Fire Department with a minimum career service rank of either Paramedic In-Charge, Fire Engineer (including EMT or Paramedic), Lieutenant (including EMT or Paramedic) or Captain (including EMT or Paramedic); depending upon technical/specialized assignment
• Plus three (3) years of technical/specialized work experience in either of the following areas: office administration, fire prevention, emergency medical services operations, training, HazMat incident response; depending upon technical/specialized assignment, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience
• Some positions included, but are not limited to the Bureau of Fire Prevention, Special Operations, and Training may require a Bachelor's degree or higher and one (1) year of specialized/technical work experience in lieu of the three (3) years of technical/specialized work experience.
Licensure, Certification, or Other Qualifications
A valid State of Illinois driver's license is required.
Must have an Illinois Office of the State Fire Marshal Instructor I or Lead Instructor I certification
