Starting Salary: $119,244
(New hires are paid the starting rate. Current employees' pay rate is determined by their job title and years of service.)
This position is open to the public and all current City employees covered under the City's collective bargaining agreement with AMERICAN FEDERATION OF STATE, COUNTY, AND MUNICIPAL EMPLOYEES (AFSCME) - BARGAINING UNIT 1, 3, 4 & 5. Only employees in City job titles in this bargaining unit are eligible to bid.

Under direction, provides medical care for the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases and disorders of animals working in a fast-paced Medical Section at the Animal Care and Control Center. Day to Day responsibilities include triaging, stabilizing and treating animals with an illness or injury; perform medical rounds to assess the health, comfort and welfare of each animal; perform routine and non-routine surgeries specifically spay or neuter; chart medical records; lead staff through medical procedures.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
• Provides diagnostic, non-surgical, and surgical treatment to sick and injured animals impounded at the ACC following established protocols and procedures
• Performs spay/neuter surgeries for shelter dogs, cats and rabbits, including pediatrics, in-heat and pregnant animals, pyometras and cryptorchids
• Performs soft tissue surgeries for shelter animals such as mass removals, enucleations and amputations
• Conducts daily observation of bite animals undergoing rabies quarantine to ensure compliance with local rabies regulations
• Examines and evaluates animals and makes recommendations for outcomes
• Manages daily medical rounds for shelter animals and makes recommendations for treatments
• Administers inoculations of animals to protect against contagious diseases
• Provides input and documents the investigation of animal cruelty cases; acts as an expert witness in animal cruelty court cases
• Prepares reports detailing veterinary activities and interpreting pathology results
• Enters and ensures medical records, electronic and/or written, are accurate and complete in the departmental database
• Supervise controlled substance dispensing procedures
• Conduct euthanasia, as needed
• Coordinates with other agencies to provide care, as needed
• Educates the public on topics relating to animal health, behavior and the humane treatment and care of animals
• Instructs and provides guidance to Veterinarian Assistants
• May provide oversight to veterinary students

Qualifications
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Doctoral Degree in Veterinary Medicine
Licensure, Certification, or Other Qualifications
• Must be licensed to practice veterinary medicine in the State of Illinois at the time of hire.
• Must receive Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) license within 90 days of hire.
