Join us and be part of something bigger - helping to simplify health care one person, one family and one community at a time.Oak Street Health, a CVS Health company, is seeking a Chief Medical Officer (CMO) to provide executive leadership for its national provider organization. This role is responsible for ensuring the consistent execution, evolution, and performance of Oak Street Health's clinical care model across all markets.
The CMO will lead a large, complex, and highly integrated provider organization of approximately 1,300 clinicians and clinical leaders, including Executive Medical Directors, Regional Medical Directors, Senior Medical Directors, Center Medical Directors, physicians, advanced practice providers, behavioral health clinicians, and nursing teams.
Core Responsibilities
Enterprise Clinical Leadership
- Provide executive leadership for the national provider organization, driving alignment and consistent execution of Oak Street Health's care model across all markets
- Oversee clinical leadership across four divisions, ensuring strong performance, accountability, and alignment to enterprise priorities
- Partner in a dyad leadership model with the Chief Operating Officer to align clinical and operational strategy and drive enterprise performance
Performance & Care Model Execution
- Establish clear performance expectations and drive accountability across clinical teams through data, metrics, and outcomes
- Improve overall provider performance, including clinical quality, productivity, and care model adherence
- Lead initiatives to enhance clinical documentation accuracy, coding (risk adjustment), and Stars performance
- Drive medical cost management strategies within a value-based care framework
Clinical Team & Leadership Development
- Directly lead and develop Executive Medical Directors, fostering a high-performing and accountable leadership culture
- Build and strengthen clinician leadership across all levels (CMDs, SMDs, RMDs, EMDs), with a strong focus on succession planning
- Champion provider wellness, education, leadership development, and long-term career growth
Workforce Strategy & Operations
- Oversee national provider workforce strategy, including recruitment, onboarding, credentialing, retention, and workforce planning
- Lead provider lifecycle management from sourcing through onboarding (Day 1 to Day 90)
- Drive workforce initiatives to ensure scale, quality, and sustainability of the provider model
Clinical Excellence, Quality & Safety
- Lead enterprise Quality and Patient Safety functions, promoting a culture of continuous improvement and high reliability
- Ensure adherence to regulatory standards and evidence-based care practices to improve patient outcomes
- Provide executive oversight of interdisciplinary clinical teams, including nursing and behavioral health
Cross-Functional Partnership
- Partner closely with executive leaders across Population Health, Growth, Patient Experience, Clinical Operations, and Payer Strategy
- Align clinical priorities with enterprise strategy, growth initiatives, and value-based care performance goals
External Leadership
- Serve as the senior physician executive representing Oak Street Health with external partners, payers, and key stakeholders
- Advance the organization's mission of delivering high-quality, value-based primary care for Medicare populations
Education
- MD or DO required
- Board Certification required
Experience & Qualifications
- Proven experience leading large, complex, multi-layered provider organizations in a highly matrixed environment.
- Deep expertise in Medicare, value-based care, population health, and complex healthcare delivery models
- Strong understanding of risk adjustment, Stars performance, clinical documentation, and medical cost management will be highly valued
- Demonstrated ability to influence without direct authority and drive alignment across senior executive stakeholders
- Track record of setting clinical strategy, developing policies/standards, and delivering measurable improvements in quality and outcomes
- Experience developing innovative care models addressing social determinants of health, care access, and virtual care delivery
- Exceptional leadership, communication, and executive presence
- Strong analytical mindset with ability to use data to drive decision-making
- Ability to operate with urgency, accountability, and a results-oriented approach
This pay range represents the base hourly rate or base annual full-time salary for all positions in the job grade within which this position falls. The actual base salary offer will depend on a variety of factors including experience, education, geography and other relevant factors. This position is eligible for a CVS Health bonus, commission or short-term incentive program in addition to the base pay range listed above. This position also includes an award target in the company's equity award program.
